Center exposure = board width + batten width. Coverage per square foot of wall = center ÷ 12. Number of battens = wall length ÷ center distance (round up). Example: 12″ board + 2″ batten = 14″ center → 14÷12 = 1.17 sq ft of board per sq ft of wall. A 2,400 sq ft wall needs about 2,800 sq ft of board area.

How far apart should battens be?

Batten spacing IS the center distance — measured from the left edge of one batten to the left edge of the next. Standard B&B uses spacing equal to board width + batten width. 8″ board + 1.5″ batten = 9.5″ center. Do NOT use 12″ centers universally — that only works with specific board/batten combinations.

How much waste for Board & Batten?

Vinyl B&B: 8–10% waste. Fiber cement B&B: 12–15% (cuts chip easily). Wood B&B: 10–12% (natural defects + cutting). Waste is slightly higher than lap because each batten needs precise length cuts.

What does 'center exposure' mean?

Center exposure is the distance between the center of one board to the center of the next board — or equivalently, the distance between the left edge of one batten to the left edge of the next. For B&B, center = board width + batten width. This number directly controls how many battens you need.

Is vertical siding the same as Board & Batten?

Not exactly. All B&B is vertical, but not all vertical siding is B&B. Vertical lap siding (one vertical board per course) uses a simpler math, while B&B specifically uses two components — a wide board and a narrow batten — which creates the shadow lines that define the style.

Board & Batten vs. T-111 siding — what's the difference?

T-111 is an OSB plywood product with vertical grooves mimicking B&B. It's cheaper (sometimes $2–$4/sq ft) and faster to install but: (1) it's plywood — it delaminates and rots in 15–25 years vs B&B's 25–50, (2) it lacks the real board/batten depth and shadow lines, (3) replacement boards are hard to match once grooves fade.

How to replace T-111 with Board & Batten?

Two approaches: (1) Overlay: install B&B directly over T-111 panels — works if existing surface is flat and solid, adds about 1″ to wall thickness. (2) Full replacement: strip T-111, repair sheathing if needed, then install B&B. Full replacement is $1–$2/sq ft more expensive but lets you inspect and fix rot before hanging new siding.
