T1-11 is the cheapest way to get a board-and-batten look — but it's also the shortest-lived. If you need a longer-lasting option, check out our board and batten calculator for vinyl, fiber cement, and wood real B&B options, and run all your wall dimensions through the main siding calculator.

Panels fit perfectly when your wall width is a multiple of 4 feet. A 40 ft wall = exactly 10 panels per row with zero horizontal waste. A 38 ft wall gives you 10 panels but leaves 2 ft — you waste an entire panel to cover that gap. Design your T1-11 walls in 4 ft increments if possible.
OSB is great for sheathing under cladding, but as exterior siding on its own it delaminates when exposed to sun and rain — the edges swell and the strands fuzz. Never install OSB as the final siding product on a residential home. Use it only for farm buildings and sheds you plan to paint or re-sheet within 5 years.
Every horizontal seam on T1-11 must have a center batten — not just for looks. Without it, wind and rain penetrate the gap between panels, water runs down inside the wall, and you get rot. Battens add about 15% to your labor budget but are non-negotiable for a weathertight install.
Center Batten Math — The Hidden Cost of T1-11
Every horizontal seam between T1-11 panels needs a center batten. The number of battens isn't the same as the number of panels — it depends on how many courses of panels are stacked vertically.
Battens per wall = (Number of vertical panel courses) × (2 horizontal edges) + 2 corner battensExample: 40 ft × 16 ft wall
Panels per row (40 ft ÷ 4 ft) = 10 panels
Vertical courses (16 ft ÷ 8 ft) = 2 courses
Battens: 2 horizontal seams × 10 panels = 20
Plus 2 corner battens = 22 battens total
Frequently Asked T1-11 & Plywood Siding Questions
How many T1-11 panels do I need?▼
Panel coverage is 32 sq ft each. Divide net wall area by 32, add 15% waste. Formula: Panels = (Net Area ÷ 32) × 1.15, round up.
T1-11 vs real board and batten siding?▼
T1-11 is one 4×8 panel with pre-formed grooves. Real B&B is individual narrow boards with separate battens. T1-11 installs 3× faster and costs ~50% less, but isn't as authentic-looking. T1-11 is $4–$7/sq ft installed; real B&B is $6–$14/sq ft.
4×8 plywood siding coverage?▼
Every 4×8 panel (32 sq ft) covers 32 sq ft of wall. Round up per row — you can't efficiently install a partial panel. Waste: 12% plain plywood, 15% T1-11.
T1-11 replacement cost?▼
$4–$7/sq ft installed for replacement — slightly cheaper than new because you remove old panels first. New authentic wood B&B replacement is $7–$11/sq ft.
Do I need center battens on T1-11?▼
Yes — every horizontal seam needs one. Battens provide weathertightness and cover gaps. This is not optional — without them, rain penetrates and causes rot behind the panels.
Can I paint T1-11 panels?▼
Primed T1-11 needs topcoat paint within 6 months — the primer is only a base. Cedar T1-11 can be clear-finished with penetrating oil or painted. Repaint every 7–10 years depending on climate.
