Vinyl's waste factor is lower than fiber cement — 8–10% for standard D4/D5, 10–12% for shake with its irregular edges. This step is often defaulted incorrectly.

- D4 example: 2,200 sq ft ÷ 200 = 11 cartons
- D5 example: same 2,200 sq ft ÷ 160 = 14 cartons

16″ on-center is the national standard for vinyl siding nail spacing. Hurricane zones (Dade County FL, coastal TX/MS/LA) require 12″ OC. Always spec 12″ OC if you are unsure — excess nails cost $10–$20 for an entire house.
Vinyl expands 1/2″ per 100 ft for every 100°F temperature rise. A 200 ft wall can expand 1 full inch from winter to summer. Fail to leave end gaps and the panels buckle — the #1 vinyl siding callback nationwide.
Vinyl siding is low-maintenance — but it can be painted if you use a premium exterior latex. The risk: dark colors absorb more heat and accelerate expansion/contraction, shortening the siding's life. Stick to colors lighter than the original.
