One Takeoff, Four Ways to Read It

A siding project asks the same handful of questions in a different order every time: how much area is really being covered, how many cartons that becomes, how much trim keeps the weather out, what the whole thing costs, and which parts of the cost belong to material, labor, and demolition. Most sites answer one of those questions and leave you to find the rest elsewhere — which is where estimates go wrong, because a square count from one page and a trim guess from another were never computed from the same house in the first place. The Siding Calculator toolset is built the other way around: every section reads one shared takeoff.

That shared takeoff is the design decision everything else follows. The wall list you enter feeds the gross area; the gables you add feed the peaks the rectangles miss; the openings you deduct feed both the net area and the J-channel run; the profile you choose sets the carton conversion and the board count. Add rectangular wall sections and triangular gables until the list matches the house in front of you — front, back, both sides, dormers, porch returns, bump-outs. Deduct doors, windows, and garage doors from the preset shelf or by custom area, and the net figure that comes back is the surface that will actually wear siding. Field siding gets the glory and trim stops the job. The accessory estimator works from the geometry you already entered: J-channel around every opening and along gable rakes, corner posts from the building's vertical corners, starter strip along the base perimeter, and fascia where the roofline asks for it. Piece counts come back in standard 10 ft and 12 ft lengths, always rounded up, because a fraction of a corner post is not a thing the supply house sells and a piece short on Saturday is a crew standing still. First-time estimators forget this category entirely; experienced ones buy from it first.

This category holds the reference layer: ten profile presets with real exposures and carton coverages — vinyl Double 4, 4.5, and 5, lap and clapboard at 4 through 8 inches, fiber cement planks, corrugated metal, and board-and-batten — each fully editable when your carton label says otherwise. The unit system switches as a whole, inputs and outputs together, so a metric plan converts without a second pass of manual arithmetic. One House, Six Figures, Zero Disagreement

The test of a shared takeoff is simple: run the same house through every lens and the story has to stay consistent. Here is a 40 × 24 single-story ranch with two end gables — the most common house in the neighborhood — through the figures it meets on the way to an order. Every number traces back to the same sections, and you can reproduce each one in the tool that names it.

Gross Walls

1,280 sq ft

Front and back 40 × 10 = 400 each, both sides 24 × 10 = 240 each — four sections, entered one at a time, because no real house is a single rectangle.

STEP 2

Gables

+192 sq ft

Two end gables, 24 ft base with an 8 ft rise: 24 × 8 ÷ 2 = 96 apiece. The step a rectangle-only estimate never sees — nearly two squares hiding in the roofline.

STEP 3

Openings

−202 sq ft

A 16 × 7 garage (112), six 36 × 48 windows (72), and a 32 × 80 double door (17.8) — clicked from presets, not hand-multiplied.

STEP 4

Net & Waste

1,270 → 1,397 sq ft

Net area after deductions is 1,270 sq ft; the 10% waste default — cuts at every opening, corner, and course stagger — lifts the order to 1,397.

1,397 sq ft is 13.97 squares → 14. In Vinyl Double 5 at 160 sq ft per carton: 8.73 → 9 cartons. Rounded up, because fractions are not buyable.

Why This Matters on a Real Project

The classic failure is not one bad number — it is two good numbers that were never talking. A square count copied from a supplier’s rough guess, a trim total eyeballed at the counter, a labor figure quoted on gross instead of net area. Each one is an honest estimate made in isolation; stacked together they produce an order that is short, an invoice that surprises, or both.

Sharing one takeoff is the structural fix. The wall list that set your squares also sets your cartons; the openings that reduced your area also sized your J-channel; the net area that priced the labor also justified the material total. Are all of the calculators free to use?

Yes — every tool on this page is free, requires no account, and has no usage caps or paywalled fields. The site is a reference toolset, not a lead-generation funnel: nothing gates a result, and no result is emailed to anyone.

Is this one calculator or several?

One engine, several lenses. The takeoff, the trim counts, and the cost split all read the same wall, gable, and opening data you enter, so a figure from one section is always consistent with the others. There is no second copy of the math to drift out of date — and no re-typing your house when you switch sections.

Where do the coverage numbers come from?

Each profile preset carries a typical exposure and carton coverage — for example, vinyl Double 4 at a 4-inch exposure commonly covers 200 sq ft per carton, Double 5 about 160, and fiber cement planks 130 to 156 depending on exposure. Manufacturers vary by product line and production era, so every preset is editable: read the coverage printed on the carton you actually plan to buy and type it in.

Which calculator should I start with?

Can I work in metric only?

Yes. Switch the unit system and the inputs, presets, and outputs all move together — metres and square metres in, and the square-and-carton conversions still make sense on the imperial side where siding is actually sold. Both unit sets stay visible on results, so a metric plan can still be checked against an imperial price list.
