Gable Triangle Siding Calculator — Peak & Waste
The most commonly miscalculated siding area. This calculator handles standard gables, gambrel double-slope roofs, dormer reverse gable deductions, and the coverage loss that plagues every triangular section.

Why Gable Siding Waste Is Higher Than Rectangle Walls
Rectangle walls run boards horizontally with nearly zero offcut waste. Gables are triangles — every row of boards gets shorter as you approach the peak. The offcut from each board is a triangle you can't reuse. This is where the extra waste comes from.
Rectangle Wall — 0% Coverage Loss
Gable Triangle — 5–15% Coverage Loss
Coverage Loss by Roof Pitch — Industry Benchmark
| Roof Pitch | Slope Description | Coverage Loss | Gable Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2/12 or less | Flat, shed-style | 5% | Shed gables |
| 3/12 | Very low slope | 5% | Low-profile gables |
| 4/12 | Low slope | 6% | Simple ranch gables |
| 5/12 | Standard slope | 8% | Most common gables |
| 6/12 | Classic slope | 10% | Colonial, farmhouse |
| 8/12 | Steep | 12% | Cape cod, gambrel upper |
| 10/12 | Very steep | 14% | High-pitch homes |
| 12/12 | Cathedral (45°) | 15% | Cathedral ceilings, A-frames |
Use slant height (hypotenuse) when you need the perimeter of the gable for ordering rake trim. Slant = sqrt((base÷2)² + rise²). On a 24 ft base at 5/12 pitch: sqrt(12² + 5²) = 13 ft each side = 26 ft total perimeter.
Home inspectors and DIYers love measuring sloped rafter length with a tape and calling it the gable rise. For a 24 ft base at 5/12 pitch that 13 ft slant inflates the gable from 60 sq ft to 156 sq ft — a 2.6× overorder. Always use straight-up vertical measurement.
Professional estimators always add coverage loss on gables — it accounts for the triangular offcuts from each siding row. If you omit it and only order the geometric area, you'll short 5–15% on your gable material. This is the single most common gable estimating mistake.
Dormer Siding — Reverse Gable Deduction
Dormers are REVERSE gables. They project outward from the roof, and their triangular end sections need siding — but they also take away from the main wall's flat area, because the dormer opening is cut out of the main roof slope.
Net Gable Area = Main Gable Area
− (Dormer Base × Dormer Rise ÷ 2) × Dormer CountA 24 ft base main gable (5/12 pitch = 60 sq ft) with one 8 ft base dormer (4/12 pitch = 8 sq ft area): Net = 60 − 8 = 52 sq ft. Most DIY estimators forget this deduction and overorder by ~13%.
Frequently Asked Gable Siding Questions
How do you calculate siding for a gable end?▼
Gable area = base width × vertical peak rise ÷ 2. Convert pitch to rise: (base ÷ 2) × (pitch ÷ 12). Then add 5–15% waste for triangular coverage loss depending on pitch. Always use vertical rise, never sloped rafter length.
Why is gable siding waste higher than rectangle walls?▼
Rectangle walls run full board width with zero offcuts. Gables are triangles — each row gets shorter toward the peak. The triangular offcuts from every row = pure waste. 5% flat/shed, 8% standard 4–5/12, 12% steep 8/12, 15% cathedral 12/12.
Dormer siding — how to calculate negative area?▼
Dormers are reverse gables — calculate each dormer's gable area (base × rise ÷ 2) then SUBTRACT from main gable area. Don't forget: the dormer's front face (rectangle) needs siding too — that's separate from the gable deduction.
Gambrel vs standard gable siding math?▼
A gambrel has two slope segments per side — calculate each separately. Lower slope (gentler) = less waste, upper slope (steeper) = more waste. Total gable area = lower-segment-area × 2 + upper-segment-area × 2.
How do I calculate vinyl siding for a gable?▼
Same area formula (base × rise ÷ 2) + 10–15% coverage loss. Vinyl comes in fixed lengths (12 ft panels), so each row wastes more than plank siding — vinyl gable waste is typically at the higher end of the range.
Gable siding for a 30×40 garage?▼
Standard detached garage gable: 30 ft wide base, 40 ft deep. Gable area = 30 ft × (rise) ÷ 2. At 4/12 pitch: rise = 30 ÷ 2 × 4 ÷ 12 = 5 ft. Gable area = 30 × 5 ÷ 2 = 75 sq ft per end × 2 ends = 150 sq ft total. Add 8% waste → 162 sq ft.
