How to Measure for Siding — A Field Guide

Grab a tape measure or laser rangefinder. These five steps give you the numbers to type into the calculator above.

    Walk the perimeter

    Stand at one corner of your house and measure along the foundation to the next corner. Record every wall length (including porch returns and bump-outs). Add them all up — that's your total wall width.

    Measure wall height

    From the foundation line (where the siding starts) up to the eave line (where the roof starts). This is your wall height. For homes with different wall heights on different elevations, split them into separate wall sections in the calculator.

    Measure gables

    For each triangular gable, measure two numbers: (a) the base width — same as the wall below the gable — and (b) the vertical peak height from the eave line up to the ridge. Do NOT use sloped rafter length.

Boards shrink twice before they cover a wall: a nominal 6-inch board dresses down to about 5½ inches at the mill, then each lap hides another inch of overlap. The remaining exposure is all that shows — and all that counts toward coverage.

Triangle Gables & Lap Siding: Two Calculations, Two Formulas

Most siding estimating questions come down to these two: how to handle a triangular gable, and how a lap siding exposure turns into a board count. Each is one formula — and the calculator above runs both automatically for every section you add.

Siding calculator for triangle gables

A triangle is always half of its bounding rectangle, so gable area = base × vertical rise ÷ 2. Enter the base width and the peak height from eave line to ridge — the siding calculator's triangle math applies per gable, then rolls every section into your order area. The classic error is skipping the ÷2: a 24 ft × 5 ft gable doubles from 60 to 120 sq ft, and measuring along the sloped rafter instead of straight up inflates it even further.

Lap siding calculator: exposure to board count

Lap siding — vinyl lap, Dutch lap, fiber cement plank, cedar clapboard — is ordered by installed exposure, never nominal width. Coverage per board = (exposure in inches ÷ 12) × board length in feet. A 6″ exposure on a 12 ft board covers 6 sq ft, so the worked example's 1,711 sq ft order takes 285 boards — or 9 cartons at 2 squares per box. 6 Mistakes That Ruin a Siding Order

Most takeoffs don't fail on hard math — they fail on these six habits. Check yours against the list before you call the supplier.

    Squaring the gable

    Computing base × rise without dividing by 2 doubles the gable area — and nearly doubles the material on that elevation. Gable = base × rise ÷ 2, always.

    Trusting nominal width

    An 8″ board at 6½″ exposure loses about 19% of its rated coverage to laps. Every calculation must use the installed exposure, not the label width.

    Ordering exact net area

    Zero waste means the last wall runs short and the whole job waits. Even simple boxes should carry 5–8%; use 10% as your default.

    Forgetting opening trim

    A deducted window still needs J-channel, casing, and flashing — those are separate linear-foot line items, not part of the siding area.

    Mixing profiles in one takeoff

    Each profile, color, and manufacturer has its own carton coverage. Calculate per profile and keep the orders separate.
